Pedro Sánchez-Gómez trained for his residency in psychiatry at Basurto Hospital. After completing his education and working in different centres he co-created and set up the Refractory Psychosis Unit at Álava Psychiatric Hospital. This unit was established as a reference centre throughout the Basque Country specialising in the treatment of patients with serious and difficult to manage mental disorders. At that time they started research on the cognitive impairment of schizophrenia and more specifically on treatment resistance. Over the years, and with the collaboration of the Faculty of Psychology at Deusto University, they developed a cognitive rehabilitation programme for people with schizophrenia. This area of expertise along with the effects of physical activity on the symptoms of schizophrenia are the focus of their current research activity. Pedro has also taught medical undergraduate students in his capacity as associate professor at the Medical College of the Basque Country University. As well as participating in the postgraduate training of psychologists at Deusto University and continuing education activities for specialist physicians.
